Creating a Webpage – MacroMedia Guide

Here is a quick and easy guide on creating and publishing your first web page using Macromedia.

STEP ONE : Choosing format

• Decide whether you want the articles/information on your webpage to be published directly onto the page or as a document link. Document links are less desirable for many reasons, mainly that they can take up more room than a webpage and are more difficult to edit. However if you are in a hurry you can simply link documents that already exists to your blank webpage, saving you having to create text and images from scratch on the page.
• Depending on your software, the editing tools may be limited with only a select list of fonts, colours and design features. This may also make it more desirable to use external editing software and then link these documents to your webpage. When you publish a document link you can create a document in another program (Word, Adobe etc) using all its design and editing features. This can be useful for newsletters or any product catalogues that require special design touches, but there may be maximum limits on the size of the document that can be linked.

STEP TWO : Preparing Photographs

• If you are publishing photos onto your webpage, then you will need to format them to ensure they are of a good quality and the right size.
• A photo can be large enough to fit the page if you like, but will take longer to load and take up more room, so it is advised that you keep them to no more than 450 pixels wide (this will automatically amend the height as well). You can resize photos in editing programs such as Microsoft Photo Editor, simply by clicking on ‘Image’ in the tool bar and the ‘resize’, and change the sizes by pixels, cm or inches:

STEP THREE – Writing Article

• Create a new page, and select a title. Try and keep the titles to a standard format, to help you sort and organize the page more efficiently. The year, month, date and subject matter is a good idea, with an underscore separating each word, such as ‘090409_Contact_Us’:

• In Macromedia the area you can type and edit is highlighted in blue and called the ‘main content’ box. This will enlarge down the page as you type.

• If at any time you want to view the page you are working on, as it would appear as published, you can press F12. This will create a temporary draft, which you can close when you have finished viewing.
• Try to avoid underlining titles on your webpage, as Macromedia will automatically interpret these as links to other webpages or documents.
• If you want to save this draft to work on at a later date then click on ‘Save for later’ button at the top of the screen – you must do this every time you come out of the page otherwise all data will be lost.
• Complete the metadata before you publish.

STEP FOUR– Publish Webpage

• When the article is finally complete, and the metadata is in place, you can publish the page. Click on the Publish button at the top of the screen and a message will appear asking you if you want to go ahead and publish, click ‘OK’.

• You may at this point be asked to select the folder the page is to be published to (this is common is shared network programs to ensure universal publishing). Select an appropriate folder and click ‘OK’ (if you have done this a few times before the program will automatically saves it to the normal folder but just check first).
